6 week Art class looking at different media: introduction and information about materials and techniques to develop landscape based practice, relax and enjoy a creative session with like minded people. Learn principals and techniques of creating landscape / seascape compositions, use different media to develop confidence in you own creative practice, develop skills and ideas working in a lovely studio space with a qualified and experienced Art teacher / professional Artist.
Each session will begin in the studio – with a demo and info on a particular material and process – then weather allowing – the session will move outside into the Tarka Trail. Class notes and extension practice emailed after each session, various well known artists work used to inspire. All listed materials available to buy (in a tote bag for £60 at first session – or as needed – please bring ALL equipment on materials list each week, they are NOT provided within the class costs). 6 Week Afternoon Art Class – LANDSCAPES in pencil, charcoal and watercolour 2pm- 430pm Thurday’s 2-430pm, 12th June – 17th July – en plein air work on the Tarka Trail!
Book 6 weekly sessions -12th June – 17th July 2025
1 FORM – pencil
Drawing – the basics, form, shading, tonal values for depth and shapes – info about pencils – you will need an A3 sketchbook, a set of shading pencils – at least HB-6B, a rubber and willingness to be experimental and learn about the medium to apply in landscape drawing. Weather allowing, the last 45 mins of this session will be outside on the Tarka Trail. Materials: pencils, HB, 3B, 6B, or selection of soft graphite drawing pencils, soft eraser, paper – A3 heavy cartridge sheets or sketchbook.
2. COMPOSITION – chalk and charcoal Learn about single point perspective, vanishing points, the rule of 1/3s and principal of golden section, use a city scape to investigate composition and generate space. Weather allowing, the last 45 mins of this session will be outside on the East the Water Slip – applying composition to the River Torridge and Bideford Old Bridge. Materials: willow charcoal sticks and white chalk (school black board) , soft eraser, paper A3 heavy cartridge sheets or sketchbook. – any coloured / pastel texture paper / sugar paper
3. SELECTING COMPOSITION Look at the work of well known landscape artists to consider composition, using a view finder to select a landscape to draw. Weather allowing, the last 45 mins of this session will be outside on the Tarka Trail. Van Gogh, Turner, John Nash – monochrome. Materials: willow charcoal sticks and white chalk (school black board) , soft eraser, paper A3 heavy cartridge sheets or sketchbook. – any coloured / pastel texture paper / sugar paper
4. COLOUR – watercolour How to work with this wonderful medium, colour theory – from he basics to how to create depth using colour in a landscape composition – sky and land, dark – light – dark – light. Weather allowing, the last 45 mins of this session will be outside on the Tarka Trail.Materials: small set of basic watercolours, large and small soft wash brushes, heavy cartridge – or selection of watercolour papers, any water based medium will work for this session – watercolour or acrylic or water based oils 2 yellows, 2 reds, 2 blues, and black as minimum, with a pallet for mixing on.
5. PLAN / START A LANDSCAPE PAINTING Bring together composition, colour-ways, investigations of Artists work to develop an A3 landscape painting – work from provided photographs or a favourite landscape or seascape.
Materials: small set of watercolours, large and small soft wash brushes, heavy cartridge – or selection of watercolour papers, any water based medium will work for this session – watercolour or acrylic or water based oils 2 yellows, 2 reds, 2 blues, and black as minimum – watercolours provided in materials pack.
6.COMPLETE WORK AND APPLY KNOWLEDGE
The final session allows opportunity to revisit anything covered in the course – complete anything that is unfinished, develop ideas, consider abstraction – or spend the whole session outside on the Tarka Trail looking at drawing together everything learnt – obviously this is weather dependent.
