Rosie Burns Artist

Unique original Art from a prolific maker.

Artist Bio:
Rosie Burns is a painter printmaker, she is one half of Rosie and Red Art and Leather, working from studios in Bideford, North Devon. Her work is a vibrant exploration of light, life, and the interplay between humanity and the environment. More formal oil paintings celebrate the natural world, and generate urban narratives, whilst experimental printmaking processes challenge depictions of gender, environmental concerns and push the boundaries between print and paint. Rosie initially trained as an Archaeological site and find illustrator, she then went on to train in Devon to teach art and design in schools, she worked in state education for over 20 years. Rosie has exhibited locally, nationally and internationally for over 3 decades, participated in Art for Social Justice exhibitions in Miami, Berlin and the 2024 Venice Biennial. She is an Artivist, a pacifist and keen to use her work to engage broad audiences in issues of contemporary social justice.

Rosie trained in Archaeological illustration

Rosie trained in Archaeological Illustration, specialising in prehistory. Her technical drawings have been published in global papers on the Neolithic period and early human burial practices. She earned a Joint Honours degree in Archaeology and Sociology (2:1) from the University of Leicester in the late 1990s. After completing her PGCE in Art and Design at the University of Plymouth, she taught in various educational settings locally, nationally, and internationally.

Rosie exhibits with several UK galleries and regularly participates in selected local national and international open exhibitions. She supplements her income through teaching, workshops, and facilitating life drawing sessions wiht professional artist models. A prolific and eclectic artist, she is a printmaker, painter, illustrator, and writer—essentially, a maker an arts worker.

Since 2016, Rosie has increasingly focused on artivism (art activism), challenging gender depictions through small edition mono prints like “Marigold Men” and “Sirens”. She also creates Eco Prints, a series of Japanese woodcut prints addressing environmental concerns, and a longer-term project “Plastic Beach.” Her works from these collections have been featured in international artivist and social justice exhibitions worldwide, including Miami, Berlin, and the 2024 Venice Biennale. Rosie is a dyslexic pacifist, keen to share engaging images that provoke environmental and humanitarian reflection and consideration.

A bit more about Rosie:

Rosie has exhibited nationally and internationally in both group and solo exhibitions over the past three decades. For more details on her career, visit the News and Links pages. Highlights include her 2017 exhibitions in Amsterdam, residency at Oxo London: National Open Arts Exhibition. In 2019,  Marigold Man Contemplates the Spring Clean, was showcased the Wells Art Contemporary exhibition. During the 2020 pandemic, her prints were featured in The Resilient Self exhibition in London, We Are Sweet Art street art trail in Shoreditch, and a painting was selected for the Mall Galleries Discerning Eye Exhibition. In 2021, she held her final solo show at Harbour House Gallery in Kingsbridge, where she had exhibited regularly since 2006.

Beyond exhibiting, Rosie left teaching in mainstream education in July 2022, since she has taught workshops, worked in forest schools, organized community arts events, and established a life drawing day in Bideford. From 2022, she participated in North Devon events, including Plough Arts Torrington and Barnstaple Art Makers UK, and North Devon Arts and Devon Artist Network events and listings.

Alongside her leather-worker partner, Adam Morrigan, www.redsrawtawtan.com they have sold works at agricultural shows, RHS Rosemore, Arlington Court National Trust and Hartland Farmer’s markets. Rosie also held two successful solo shows at Bude Castle Galleries and participated in two Uncovered Collective exhibitions in London. Her Eco Prints were featured in the SHIM Art for Social Justice shows in Miami, Berlin, and Connecticut (2022/23), and she was published in a women’s art collection by Collect Art, based in Tbilisi, Georgia.

 Rosie has exhibited artivist works: Art For Social Justice work with SHIM, Amy Jackson curating, in exquisite corpse exhibitions internationally including the 2024 Venice Biennial, become a regular exhibitor with Artizan Gallery in Torquay – SKIN in August 2024 was the first Rosie and Red Art and Leather exhibition hosted in Artizan Gallery Lucius Street Torquay, Devon, and had work selected by the RE, Bankside Gallery London, for their annual international selected original print show 2023, and small original print exhibition Small But Mighty 2024.

2025 continues an Artivist exhibition schedule: women’s history month and IWD celebrated in works challenging the gender gap in Artizan’s Women Show, and The House of Smalls THE ASCENT OF MAN, in Edinburgh,  participation in  Delamore Arts Contemporary British Print Makers, and Makers Takeovers and ecologically minded works selected for Disappearing Wolds Wytchwood Gallery in Malton North Yorkshire and the Pensychnant Conservation Centre.
