Seasons greetings!
Whether you celebrate a super Solstice (whoophooii days get longer soon), a Happy Hanukah, a Merry Christmas, a wonderful Yule, or a winter fest to bring on the Spring, we have a welcoming warm space filled with gifts and teats for seasonal cheer!
We’re a gifted pair – in Art and Leather, we’d like to share our space and wares, a chance to meet, discuss and haggle. A treat for senses: see, feel and hear the modes of creation, unique and through the chat of makers. Do pop in and say hello, and perhaps depart with a treasure to give, or provide joy to others! Its time to think of moving forward – a creative year ahead? Sign up for first notice of classes and workshops – learn to braid, or tan or fury – attend an inky day of printing?
A successful 3rd open studio.

In reflecting on their collections, the National Gallery recognises, that in a vast 2,300 paintings spanning the 13th to early 20th century, only 21 are by women. It’s a shocking figure, and one that they use to tell a story around the “gender gap in art history”, the representation of women, and the barriers and obstacles that women faced when engaging with the art world. Today, whilst gender in itself is not a direct barrier to participation, pervasive societal inequalities that predominantly disadvantage women, continue to mean that the conversation around art and gender is of critical importance, both in relation to how women access the art world, and the role that the art they create has on the conversation.
October 2923, Artizan Gallery hosted its first ever “Women’s Open Exhibition”. Whilst historically we have had all-female line-ups frequently at the gallery, this will be the first time we have curated an exhibition with this intention at the outset, and beyond this, it will be a chance to have conversations about the history of women in art and the barriers and inequalities still present today.

SHIM Social Justice | Exquisite Codes Berlin AND SHIM Bridgeport, Connecticut, US.
Simultaneously at Bla-Bla Projektraum, Berlin, DE and SHIM Bridgeport, Connecticut, US.
The SHIM “Exquisite Codes” project began in 2020 as a response to the Covid pandemic lock-downs. Using the surrealist Exquisite Corpse concept of an interactive and absurdist parlor game applied to a time when actual human connectivity was at a nadir. The game allowed many artists to contribute to a single shared art object that was playful and unpredictable, but that could be produced remotely, “stitched together”, shipped easily, and yet maintain a “corporeal presence” that contained the same auratic shadow of a typical art object. The model was simple. Any group of artists can be understood as a single entity, or body, and be uploaded into a digital space where each individual can be seen separately. This part- the code- is an essential part of the new version of this idea. The QR code placed near the object instantly lets the viewers into the digital space where the original art objects exist. This creates a simultaneous effect of binding the analog and digital into one coherent practice. Low cost, high value, near zero carbon footprint (printing of the codes, or corpses is done locally), no shipping costs, no customs. Finally SHIM can now accelerate artists accessing the analog gallery space and their own Artsy data and sales archive; a near perfect way to travel art without all the attendant risks and costs, all the while building community among artists, and the global audience.
