Make Space’ was an opportunity for people to see contemporary artists at work in the Art Upstairs gallery. The Ascent of Man

This exhibition showcased the artwork of 70 female artists in both the gallery space and the dollhouse, made in response to their feelings at the ever-increasing oppression, repression and suppression of women around the world.

The words and language used in profiles are exactly as provided by the artists and remain unedited so that work is portrayed as intended and that what artists want to say about themselves, their work and practice – however much or little and in whatever form – is said.

https://www.thehouseofsmalls.com/theascentofman

LOOK ME IN THE EYES II Collagraph print (edition 3 of 12) 79cm x 62cm (framed) £395 This piece was first made in response to teaching art in a boys school, and regularly using that phrase with my students, repeated in response to multiple occasions of being addressed to bosom rather than face, a bra printer rather than a bra burner! Bras are sparkly, and wonderful contraptions, having big boobs is not something that should be a matter of sexualising women, bras help stop sore backs, it's clothing get over it ... all of those things ... and WTF is humanity thinking disappearing and silencing women in Afghanistan, destroying any semblance of equality in the US, a total disregard for basic HUMAN rights on the grounds of gender in global education / health care / bodily autonomy... Printing it is better than burning it - humour is essential in turning heads and minds, Artivism MATTERS!

Delamore Arts 2025 - hosted by Artizan Gallery

Contemporary British Printmakers

Following its debut success in 2024, Contemporary British Printmakers returned to Delamore Arts in 2025, curated by Artizan Collective. This captivating exhibition celebrated the richness and diversity of printmaking, showcasing the unique artistry behind techniques such as woodcuts, etchings, lithography, monotypes, and more. The magic of printmaking lies in its transformative process, where the plate or matrix serves as a liminal space, holding the work until it’s revealed in the final print. With pieces that balance traditional mastery and contemporary experimentation, the exhibition offers visitors a journey through the ever-evolving possibilities of print:  to not only celebrate printmaking but also shine a light on the extraordinary creatives shaping its future. The exhibition then toured to Artizan Gallery, Lucius Street Torquay for the month of June.

We also had a fun 3 days of Rosie and Red Art and Leather – sharing our work in the stables and offering workshops as part of the Delamore 2025 – MEET THE MAKERS  curated and organised by Artizan Collective:

OSTARA – Spring Equinox Open Studio

Rosie and Red Art and Leather

OSTARA
Spring Equinox
The clock is balanced, of day and night,
The season of song birds nesting, chicks hatching,
Narcissi nodding in the breeze, spring’s here now,
Clean out the dusts of winters chills,
Walk out and find a well filled creative space,
Put a smile of wonder on you face,
Just off the Tarka Trail where we make
Art and leather in our creative haven,
Come and see our creative ventures,
Look and question, find a treasure,
Custom a new bag, purse or belt in leather,
Find a print to adorn a wall, a talking point,
Or painting to brighten the darkest hall,
Ostara is a pagan fest, to celebrate this time of year,
Join us, book a class, commission a creation,
Investigate our latest creating,
An open studio spring adventure,
We hope to see you there!

PLASTIC BEACH is a developing body of work – started in 2012 with the connection between net packaging being light light dancing on the surface of the sea. Then a development of ideas connected to the microplastic scientific marine research slides – the colours are part of developing a new printing process – using a combination of both intaglio – rubbing ink into the textured plastic waste surface in lurid colours found on the beach – then relief on top – depicting the ideal beautifully tropical sand, turquoise, ultramarine to Prussian blue seas and oceans.

The plates are not very robust – the plastic found on the beach, and single use food packaging unstable – although an edition, only 5 prints can be taken from each plate, and like many intaglio processes not absolutely identical. The circular plate – still a porthole – but also the lens view of microplastics through a microscope. They are titles with the names of plastics – polythene, PET, nylon etc and the name of a dance – watching the plastic rubbish on the tide is like watching a waltz or tango or rhumba. They are abstract images- alarming use of complementary colour – alluring, micro- detail, with a dark tale of the microplastics in our global waters.

Single use plastics – especially PET bottles need to be banned, human blood samples now often have microplastics in them. Change is essential, Plastic Beach as a body also considers the beauty – mono prints of tropical shores, with titles like Swim? and PET bottles scratched into the sea – titled ‘Real Magic – for 450’ years – the approximate time it takes for a polyethylene terephthalate to biodegrade, are a part of the same series.

Pleased to have sold a Marigold Man, as an associate member, at the annual open Burton Art Gallery exhibition organised by the local North Devon Art Society in the Burton Art Gallery.

ART FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE curated by Amy Jackson

Exciting to be a part of a an ‘exquisite corpse’- or wall of reproduced images as a part of the Venice Biennial 2024. Click image for listing on Artsy.

Our business is growing steadily:

Seasons greetings!
Whether you celebrate a super Solstice (whoophooii days get longer soon), a Happy Hanukah, a Merry Christmas, a wonderful Yule, or a winter fest to bring on the Spring, we have a welcoming warm space filled with gifts and teats for seasonal cheer!
We’re a gifted pair – in Art and Leather, we’d like to share our space and wares, a chance to meet, discuss and haggle. A treat for senses: see, feel and hear the modes of creation, unique and through the chat of makers. Do pop in and say hello, and perhaps depart with a treasure to give, or provide joy to others! Its time to think of moving forward – a creative year ahead? Sign up for first notice of classes and workshops – learn to braid, or tan or fury – attend an inky day of printing?

A successful 3rd open studio.

A Rich Tapestry of Art

In reflecting on their collections, the National Gallery recognises, that in a vast 2,300 paintings spanning the 13th to early 20th century, only 21 are by women. It’s a shocking figure, and one that they use to tell a story around the “gender gap in art history”, the representation of women, and the barriers and obstacles that women faced when engaging with the art world. Today, whilst gender in itself is not a direct barrier to participation, pervasive societal inequalities that predominantly disadvantage women, continue to mean that the conversation around art and gender is of critical importance, both in relation to how women access the art world, and the role that the art they create has on the conversation.

October 2923, Artizan Gallery hosted its first ever “Women’s Open Exhibition”. Whilst historically we have had all-female line-ups frequently at the gallery, this will be the first time we have curated an exhibition with this intention at the outset, and beyond this, it will be a chance to have conversations about the history of women in art and the barriers and inequalities still present today.

SHIM Social Justice | Exquisite Codes Berlin AND SHIM Bridgeport, Connecticut, US.

June 17 – August 18, 2023

Simultaneously at Bla-Bla Projektraum, Berlin, DE and SHIM Bridgeport, Connecticut, US.

The SHIM “Exquisite Codes” project began in 2020 as a response to the Covid pandemic lock-downs. Using the surrealist Exquisite Corpse concept of an interactive and absurdist parlor game applied to a time when actual human connectivity was at a nadir. The game allowed many artists to contribute to a single shared art object that was playful and unpredictable, but that could be produced remotely, “stitched together”, shipped easily, and yet maintain a “corporeal presence” that contained the same auratic shadow of a typical art object. The model was simple. Any group of artists can be understood as a single entity, or body, and be uploaded into a digital space where each individual can be seen separately. This part- the code- is an essential part of the new version of this idea. The QR code placed near the object instantly lets the viewers into the digital space where the original art objects exist. This creates a simultaneous effect of binding the analog and digital into one coherent practice. Low cost, high value, near zero carbon footprint (printing of the codes, or corpses is done locally), no shipping costs, no customs. Finally SHIM can now accelerate artists accessing the analog gallery space and their own Artsy data and sales archive; a near perfect way to travel art without all the attendant risks and costs, all the while building community among artists, and the global audience.
