MARIGOLD MAN BEATS THE BIG C ‘
SOMETHING SPECIAL! This is edition 4 of 8.
Prostate cancer exists in every workplace, club, town, city and village. It’s the most common cancer in men, affecting thousands of dads, my Dad, uncles, brothers, partners, colleagues and friends everywhere.
MARIGOLD MAN BEATS THE BIG C, is a humorous original print, made to raise a smile and funds to beat prostate cancer. I am a Bideford based Artist and wanted to use my Marigold Men for something useful!
It has been a privilege to work with a wonderful man who has been living with prostate cancer for some time now and is facing further treatment. Having never modeled before, he has plucked up the courage to bare all to raise more funds for Prostate Cancer Research. This is a unique tiny edition print, only 8 from the plate – each is unique, a usual part of intaglio process, its fun, dandy and for a great cause – as the edition sells they go up in value!
Arty bit …Depiction of gender in Art has been a preoccupation since anthropological study as part of an archaeology and sociology degree in the late 1990’s. Marigold Men (Marigolds are luridly coloured rubber gloves) are a series of prints, the male nude wearing rubber gloves, comic and concerned with the depiction of men in advertising using cleaning products along side the male names given to cleaning products / vacuum cleaners. Even though the realm of the domestic is still predominantly female – ‘wouldn’t we all like a Marigold man?’ This is a small attempt to redress the lack of domestic male figures depicted in art – not just king, leader, soldier or nobleman but man who also cleans the toilet.
The prints are made by cutting and marking mount board – a waste product from picture framing, I draw out the image from life – so the prints have an immediate and direct feel, rather than working from drawings. The plate is cut and marked then sealed – inked with a roller and rubbed back to generate a more 3 dimensional tonal form: combining both relief and intaglio process. The prints are cardboard cut mono – types an edition of 8 is the usual maximum from one plate – before its too flattened and able to produce a clean image. I like the papery textures, the fact that every print is unique, like all intaglio prints the way the ink is wiped makes minute differences. The prints take a few days to dry, then the gloves are added with neon paint. It takes over a week to make an edition, each print I make is signed, numbered titles and embossed – its just me being a particular dyslexic.
MARIGOLD MAN BEATS THE BIG C is SOMETHING SPECIAL! an edition of 8 prints, and 1 artists proof – this I used the proof for the merchandise, photographed by Dave Green Photography, https://www.davegreenphoto.co.uk/, and will keep – unless I get a gargantuan offer for Prostate Cancer Research! The first edition – 1 of 8 is framed for the BIG MO – a small show at BIG-MO-SHAVE mustache shaving event at NAKED salon and cafe on Mill Street, Bideford, Devon on 1st Dec 2024, 11am-3pm – 2 of 8 was snapped up by an international collector, 3 of 8 by a local collector who had a good giggle, of AND this is 4 of 8. As the available prints sell they go up in value / cost.
The print measures 40x56cm, is sold unframed, on mount board, wrapped in bio-cello to keep it clean and dry. All profits of the sale will be donated to Prostate Cancer Research. UK postage included – do get in touch for international costs. A similar but much cheaper option is an A4 framed poster! You know you want one … its a giggle!!
